UCL Fantasy MD9 Preview

We preview the 4 fixtures on MD9, spanning two calendar days.

UCL Fantasy MD9 Preview

Manchester City VS Altetico Madrid

League form
  • City are top of the Premier League by a point and have a slightly inferior goal difference. They play Liverpool next Sunday in a potential title decider. They beat Burnley 2-0 over the weekend
  • Atletico are in third, 12 points behind the leaders. They are in good form in the league, winning their last 7 games
UCL history

Both sides have never met before in any European competition.

City’s record against Spanish sides in the UCL is 7W 2D 7L in 16 games.

Atletico’s record against English sides is 5W 7D 6L in 18 games. They won 1-0 at Manchester United in the previous round.

Players to watch

Plenty of premiums and budgets to pick from the City side.

Boxing Day FPL GW19 Stats

  • Mahrez (9.6) is the top scoring City player in UCL and has 6 goals and 1 assist to his name. He was an unused substitute over the weekend.
  • De Bruyne (11.0) scored over the weekend and looks fit and hungry of late.
  • Cancelo (6.6) is a regular starter for City and has 49 points to his name already. He also has 3 Player of the Match awards.
  • Laporte (5.3) is also very likely to start with Dias out.

No attractive Atletico picks stand out.

  • Mandava (5.7) is a surprise pack from the Atletico side, he has the most balls recovered (59) in the game so far.
  • Llorente (6.2) could be a budget midfielder, but his attacking returns are often limited.

Benfica vs Liverpool

League form
  • Benfica are currently third domestically, 12 points off the pace. Only two teams go to the UCL directly from Portugal. They lost surprisingly at SC Braga over the weekend.
  • Liverpool are one point off the top in second in the Premier League. They play Man City the coming Sunday. They enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday.
UCL history

Benfica have won the 2 games they had played against Liverpool in the UCL.

Overall, Benfica’s record against English sides is 3W 2D 7L in 12 matches.

Liverpool’s record against Portuguese sides stand at 6W 4D 2L in 12 matches. They have won in Portugal 3 times before in UCL, all at Porto.

FPL GW22 Free Hit

It is hard to see how Benfica can progress on paper, but of course there are no real surprises at this stage.

  • Otamendi (5.6) is the top Benfica player in UCL Fantasy to date with 48 points. He has 48 ball recoveries and 2 Player of the Match awards.
  • Vlachodimos (5.4) is a worthy alternative GK to consider.
  • Nunez (7.7) is a very differential Benfica attacker to consider, he has 4 goals to date including the winner at Ajax on MD8.

We are all very familiar with Liverpool assets and what they can offer.

  • Salah (11.1) has 8 UCL goals so far, amassing 62pts.
  • Jota (8.4) is on hot form and is returning to his home country.
  • Alexander-Arnold (6.7) was benched over the weekend on injury concerns but is ever so much a threat when he starts.
  • Diaz (8.1) can be a very interesting pick as well. The ex-Porto man was given off over the weekend and faces Benfica, an opponent he would be familiar with since his Porto days.
  • Alisson (6.4) is a worthy pick if you are in the camp that believes the Reds will keep clean sheets here

Chelsea vs Real Madrid

League form
  • Chelsea are third in the Premier League and have been so since early Dec. They are 14 points off the top. They were trounced 4-1 by Brentford on Saturday.
  • Real Madrid are 12 points clear at the top in La Liga and have been top since the third game of the season. They beat Celta 2-1 on Saturday.
UCL history

Chelsea met Real Madrid once before, in the semi-final of the 2020/21 UCL. They won 3:1 on aggregate.

Overall, their record against Spanish oppositions stand at 14W 15D 7L in 36 meetings.

Real’s record over English sides stand at 13 W 8D 8L in 29 meetings.

Players to watch

UCL Fantasy Ball Recoveries

Chelsea picks will depend on how far managers predict the Blues will do here against Real Madrid.

  • Christensen (5.8) is Chelsea’s top UCL Fantasy scorer but he is by no means a regular in the team. He missed just 1 game in UCL to date but has only started 14 of Chelsea’s 29 league games
  • Jorginho (6.7) is the budget midfielder who take spot kicks if he is on the pitch
  • Pulisic (8.5) can be a differential. He is currently owned by 0% of the game but has scored over the legs against Lille in the Last 16. He also scored against Real in the semi last season

For Real, there appears to be more options over the two legs.

  • Benzema (10.4) is a must have. The Frenchman is on 32 goals in 34 appearances and scored a hattrick against PSG on MD8. He also scored twice (both from the spot) over the weekend
  • Casemiro (7.4) was a previous favourite given his abilities to earn ball recoveries but he has yet to have attacking returns in the UCL this season
  • Militao (5.9) is a regular starter and can be backed if you think Real will put up a good defensive display
  • Courtois (6.6) returns to face his old club and is the game’s highest scoring GK (45)

Villarreal vs Bayern

League form
  • Villarreal are 7th in La Liga. They have lost 3 of their last 4 league games including a 2-0 loss at bottom side Levante over the weekend.
  • Bayern are top in the Bundesliga, 9 points clear. They won 4-1 at Freiburg over the weekend.
UCL history

Villarreal met Bayern 11 years ago in the Group Stages of UCL, losing both games. They have never met any other German oppositions in the competition.

Bayern have met Spanish teams in UCL for 48 times – 25W 8D 15L.

Players to watch

UCL Fantasy MD8 Captain

On paper it is hard to see Villarreal progressing, but they offer two good budget picks

  • Danjuma (7.2) has been a revelation so far. He has 5 goals and 2 assist + 2 Player of the Match awards
  • Capoue (6.4) is a perfect enabler. He has 48 balls recovered to date

The usual suspects from Bayern are all worth a look.

  • Lewandowski (12.2) is a hot favourite at 50% ownership. He has 12 goals and 3 assists to date, including a hattrick on MD8 (+2 penalties earned)
  • Sane (9.6) has 6 goals and 6 assists, including 3 goals from outside the box (3 more points)
  • Defensively, Pavard (5.8) is a steady pick
  • Neuer (6.4) is back after injury but is a premium price to pay for a defender
  • Gnabry (10.4) is expensive, but worth considering
