UCL Fantasy MD8 Preview

MD8 is the second leg of the Last 16 ties.  UCL fantasy managers can make 3 free transfers so it is not a good time to use the wildcard chip.

We look at each of the 8 fixtures and identify some picks.

UCL Fantasy MD8 Preview

Liverpool VS Inter (agg: 2-0)

FPL GW13 Stats

  • Liverpool are the form team of Europe at the moment, winning their last 12 matches in all competitions.
  • Inter are inconsistent of late, winning just one of their last 6 games but did return to the top of Serie A thanks to results around them over the weekend.

Matip, Thiago and Firmino will be absentees here for Liverpool. Perisic is missing for Inter.

Salah (11m) has 8 goals to date and is a must have for as long as Liverpool stays in the competition. Mane (10.4m) is a good alternative but has fared poorer in UCL so far, scoring just twice.

Alexander-Arnold (6.6m) and Robertson (6.3m) are always reliable picks for the Reds. Diaz (8.1m) and Jota (8.4m) will vie for the other starting spot so neither can nailed.

There are no outstanding picks from the Inter side, with their likely elimination, best not to bring any Inter players in.

Bayern vs Salzburg (agg: 1-1)

UCL Fantasy MD4 Captain

  • Bayern drew over the weekend but are still lead comfortably by 9 pts in the Bundesliga
  • Salzburg are 18 points ahead domestically, but are overwhelmingly underdogs in this fixture

Neuer is still out for Bayern, who also misses Tolisso, Davies and Goretzka.

Salzburg have a fair bit of injuries, missing 6 players including Okafor, Onguene and Solet.

Lewandowski (12.1m) is a top pick this round, definitely a captain choice for the first calendar day as well. Sane (9.5m) blanked on MD7 but is still the game’s top pts scorer (67).

Ulreich (4.5m) is a top pick this MD at his price point, but may have little value afterwards with Neuer returning.

One stand out pick from Salzburg, Adeyemi (7.8m) is on good form all season, scoring 3 times, earning 4 penalties and winning 2 Player of the Match awards.

Real Madrid vs PSG (agg: 0-1)

UCL Fantasy MD8 Preview

  • Real Madrid have won 3 games consecutively domestically and are now 8 pts clear in La Liga
  • PSG played poorly and lost over the weekend but are still 13 pts clear in Ligue 1.

Real Madrid are missing Mendy and Casemiro on suspension. Marcelo and Kroos are injured. PSG misses 5 players, Hakimi and Herrera being more important absentees.

This game is very likely to be very tight, no good picks stand out from either side. The score line is also wide open, either side have a good chance of progress.

Mbappe (11m) is the only player on our radar, the French forward loves the big stage and has 5 goals this campaign and 3 Player of the Match award. (update: Mbappe is now flagged and may not be involved)

Man City vs Sporting (agg: 5-0)

FPL GW24 Stats

  • City won 15 of their last 17 games and are 6 points ahead in the Premier League
  • Sporting are 6pts behind in Liga Portugal, winning comfortably over the weekend

Walker is suspended while Dias and Ake are longer term absentees. Nunes is suspended for Sporting.

With such a comfortable first leg lead, City should rest a few players, especially in the attacking front. Always hard to guess who will play in these type of games for City but Cancelo (6.5m), Laporte (5.1m) and Stones (5.5m) look nailed given the absentee list.

Don’t bother about Sporting players; they are almost certain to be eliminated after this game.

Man Utd vs Atletico (agg: 1-1)

FPL GW09 Wildcard

  • United were duly thrashed by City over the weekend and are now fifth in the battle for Top 4
  • Atletico are 4th after a good win over Betis over the weekend

A worrisome injury list for United with Shaw, Ronaldo, Varane and Cavani all doubtful. Greenwood is of course a long term absentee. Atletico are no better off, 9 injuries of varying severity leaves their squad paper thin.

This tie is evenly placed. Fernandes (10.9m) is a good pick because he is a certain starter under the circumstances. He will always be the fulcrum of United attack if Ronaldo is absent. Given their defensive fragilities, United defenders are no-go.

No Atletico player stand out, they are just not the same beast this season given their issues with injuries.

Ajax vs Benfica (agg: 2-2)

UCL Fantasy MD4 Limitless

  • Ajax won over the weekend and are two points ahead in the Eredivisie
  • Benfica won over the weekend as well but ten points off the mark domestically

Ajax misses 5 players including 2 goalkeepers. No injury concerns for Benfica.

It is very hard to ignore Haller (9.4m), the UCL’s top scorer with 11 goals so far. He scored one goal and one own goal on MD7. Antony (8.1m) is another good pick as a forward; he has 5 assist and 2 goals to date.

Onana (5.0m) is certain to start for Ajax, who are also favourites to progress from here. Mazraoui (5.2m) is a strong differential pick for MD8.

No strong picks from Benfica, Otamendi (5.4m) has done well so far with 41pts but chances of a Benfica clean sheet in Amsterdam is not high.

Juventus vs Villarreal (agg: 1-1)

UCL Fantasy MD7 Preview

  • Juventus have shrugged off a poor start to their season and are now 14 games unbeaten in the league. They are 7 points behind Inter in Serie A in 4th
  • Villarreal are 7th in La Liga and lost at lowly Osasuna over the weekend

Juventus are missing 10 first-team players. Chellini, Bonnucci, Alex Sandro and Chiesa are key absentees. Dybala is back in training. Moreno and Alacer are key absentees for Villarreal.

Vlahovic (9.5m) is a very good pick from Juventus; the Serb is a goal scoring machine and found the net on MD7. De Ligt (5.5m) is a good defensive pick from Juventus if a clean sheet here is fancied. Szczesny (5.7m) is the unchallenged number one.

Danjuma (7.0m) and Capoue (6.2m) have both done superbly for Villarreal to date but they face an uphill challenge here.

LOSC vs Chelsea (agg: 0-2)

  • LOSC are 7th in the Ligue 1, 4 points off the top 4
  • Chelsea are unbeaten in 90mins over their last 10 games in 5 different competitions. They are third in the Premier League.

FPL GW05 Stats

No injury concerns for LOSC. Chelsea are missing Azpilicueta.

Chelsea are favourites to progress and are not likely to slip up here on MD8 so it may be a good time to load up Chelsea players.

In defence, Rudiger (5.9m) and Thiago Silva (5.7m) offer stability. Mendy (6.4m) is a clear choice as Chelsea is favoured for the clean sheet here as well. Jorginho (6.7m) may not start but he takes penalties for Chelsea. Upfront, Havertz (9.1m) scored twice over the weekend.

James (5.6m) started 3 of Chelsea’s 7 UCL games but as witnessed in the Premier League, can be a very powerful pick as a defender.

David (8.2m) is a strong differential pick from LOSC, but there are probably better picks as Forwards in UCL fantasy.
