Returning FPL Assets from AFCON

AFCON 2021 ends on 7 Feb, so all players should return to FPL action in some shape or form for GW24.

We look at the top 4 FPL assets returning.

Returning FPL Assets from AFCON

Mohamed Salah (£12.7)

Favourite FPL Players

He scored the crucial penalty in the penalty shootout against Ivory coast to steer them through to the QF of the AFCON. Egypt will be facing Morocco and his Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane’s Senegal will be facing Equatorial Guinea.

It is a no-brainer that Salah is a must have in the squads whenever available and has proved to be an automatic captain choice. With a total of 177 pts in 21 games and contributing to 16g and 10a, with a whooping xG of 15.61 and xA of 6.22, you need to integrate him back in your team without taking any major hits. However, I would still want to wait to see on Egypt’s progress, if they win the QF, he will be tied up at least till 6th Feb. If they win/lose the SF, they will play the final/bronze final on 6th Feb and if he flies back on 7th Feb, he will have 3+ days to prepare for the game against Leicester.

I am not sure if Klopp would want to start him considering he plays a game on 30th Jan, 3rd Feb and 6th Feb (3 games in a span of 8 days).

Liverpool play Leicester (H) in GW24, Burnley(A) and Norwich(H) in GW25 and GW26 respectively with a blank in GW27.

Salah is a must own player in FPL and you have to find a route to bring him in GW24 considering he has easy fixtures in GW25 and GW26.

He is a dangerous asset even if he starts from the bench. He scored 2G and 1A against Palace from bench being subbed in at 57′ in GW14 last season on 19th Dec’2020.

Maxwell Cornet (£5.9)

FPL GW11 Stats

He is the most exciting prospect in this whole series. Ivory Coast lost against Egypt on Penalties which means Cornet, Pepe, Zaha and Bailey will be back for their respective clubs.

He is classified as a Mid and playing OOP as a striker for the Clarets. With Chris Wood moving to Newcastle, Cornet will be crucial in Dyche’s 4-4-2 formation along with one of Vydra / Rodriguez.

However, Burnley are currently interested in signing Wolfburg 6 ft 6in striker Wout Weghorst, Cornet should still be starting up front.

Cornet is versatile and can play at left side of the midfield too, but that looks unlikely as Dwight McNeil is more effective on the left flank rather than the right side.

Cornet has played 607 minutes of PL football and is already topping the charts for Burnley with 6 goals at a league high (you read it right) 103.8mins/goal which is in fact even higher than Salah (111.6 mins), Mahrez (137.2) and Jota (157.7).

While the end product is certainly there, the underlying stats don’t look so attractive at an overall xG of a meagre 1.62 which means has over performed almost 3.7 times of the xG this season. Moreover, there is a fitness issue as well as he has not completed 90 minutes in any game so far this season and has played for only 86 minutes in AFCON, starting one and coming off the bench for 15 mins in another.

The Clarets have 5 games in hand and if they want to survive, Cornet is going to be the key.

They have tough fixtures in GW24 and GW25 where they are facing Manchester United and Liverpool respectively at home.

I would not particularly want him in my team right now as there are better options available in this price range at the moment. I will wait for the DGW announcements in the future and he is definitely going to be an important player in Free Hit teams for the DGWs.

Riyad Mahrez (£8.6)

FPL GW28 Stats

There were high hopes from defending AFCON Champions Algeria and it came as a shock to watch the Mahrez led Algerian team crash out in the group stages. It has been a tough tournament for Mahrez as he played 90 minutes each in 3 fixtures and failed to score a goal and even missed from the spot against Ivory Coast.

Mahrez is going to play a crucial role in the congested February month with 6 games across the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in a span of 3 weeks.

He has already contributed to 6g and 5a totaling 77 pts in just 823 minutes (one attacking return every 74.8 minutes). These numbers are best in the city team with Foden (£8.0) at 121.7, Gundogan (£7.2) at 133.6 and KDB (£12.2) at 137.25.

It means Mahrez is certainly the most explosive option of the lot provided he starts and gets minutes regularly. He has been unstoppable in the recent games and has 4g and 3a in the last 4 starts for City amassing 44 pts.

In the current scheme of things, KDB and Sterling have started the last 3 games in a row and seem to be the safest bet in Pep’s roulette, Bernardo (£7.5) is also a safe option, however, his attacking output has been limited in the recent past. Foden and Grealish (£7.6) have been the biggest beneficiaries in the absence of Mahrez.

The 100m signing Grealish has not lived up to the expectations but I still expect Pep to give him game time. On paper they have easier fixtures in GW24 – Brentford (H) and GW25 – Norwich (A), they travel to Portugal for their R16 game against Sporting which is 3 days after the trip to Norwich and we can expect a lot of rotations.

You need to have at least 1 City midfielder in your team considering the Form and Fixtures. KDB and Sterling seem to be the safer bets right now, however, looking at the fixture congestion, there will be rotations and Mahrez is dangerous even if he comes from the bench and he is City’s designated penalty taker.

If you don’t have the budget to fit KDB or Sterling in your team, Mahrez certainly provides you the passage to a cheaper city mid along with Foden. I wish I had a magic wand to decode Pep’s roulette.

Kalechi Iheanacho (£6.9)

FPL GW30 Review
Nigeria crashed out in the R16 against Tunisia which means he is back and will be rested and fit to face Nottingham Forest in R4 of the FA Cup.

Nacho had a productive AFCON where he started all 4 games for Nigeria. He recorded a goal and an assist in 289 minutes. Nacho started two games in a row against Manchester City and Liverpool before leaving for AFCON. He even recorded a goal and 2 assists at the Etihad Stadium.

With Vardy recovering from a hamstring injury that has ruled him out till March, we should see Nacho getting more starts and minutes. Nacho was in great form in the 2nd half of the last season scoring 11 goals and 2 assists in 12 league games.

Patson Daka (£7.1) has been in fine form to compete for the striker spot but I am not very positive that Claudio Ranieri will play with 2 strikers and for Nacho and Daka have to start together, Nacho will have to play in the number 10 role.

James Maddison (£7.0) has been in amazing form in that number 10 role with 5g and 5a in the last 8 games. The possibility of both Nacho and Daka starting looks bleak too.

Leicester will face Liverpool (A) – GW24, West Ham United (H) – GW25 and Wolves (A) – GW26 and a blank in GW27. With Vardy out and Leicester having 4 games in hand, he is surely one to watch. I would want to wait and watch the Nottingham Forest and Liverpool game.
