FPL GW17 Captain

Here we go again. Covid wrecked some havoc in GW16 and will continue to cause disruption to GW17. United’ visit is now off.

We got our panel to pick their Vice-captains for the week too.

FPL GW17 Captain

Captain: Salah, obviously. VC: I want to say Ronaldo but with Man Utd’s match against Brentford in doubt I’ll say Bernardo Silva.

Looks like we’re about to return to the Covid lottery to see which matches go ahead and which get postponed…

Salah is the defensive choice as a captain – we can expect a very high effective ownership. We can expect managers expending their TC chip on him here as well.

As for Vice-Captain, Mount is a good choice. He has 3 goals and 2 assists in his last 3 games, playing against a woeful Everton side which has a horrible record at Stamford Bridge.

Salah versus Newcastle is something of a no-brainer. Newcastle have had their new manager bounce and it is back to business as was shown by the comprehensive 4-0 defeat at the hands of Leicester City. Newcastle have a long and difficult road ahead to get on top of their defensive issues. This will not happen overnight and certainly not in time to save them from the best attack in the league.

I always play my Triple Captain chip in a double gameweek, however, if that weren’t permitted, then I would seriously be eyeing up this match to play the chip.

Salah. I think the rest of the panel have already explained why. See you next week.

Gallagher seems a good option for vc. I fully expect him to have another run out against a weak Southampton.

I am going (yet again) somewhat against the grain and going for go for Alexander-Arnold. Against a Newcastle side bereathed of confidence with TAA having access to the clean sheet points as well as getting forward at every possibility.

As a VC, I have plumped for Emmanuel Dennis. 2nd for goal involvements behind Salah this season and up against lowly Burnley, I think he could be a good differential.

Salah is the only option. Under Eddie Howe Bournemouth conceded an average of 42 goals per season. Salah scored 8 goals and 1 assist in 6 games against them. Eddie Howe does not set his teams to defend and unfortunately for him, the Newcastle defence seems to be worse than his Bournemouth defence. I expect Liverpool to score a hatful of goals.

For VC I’m going for Connor Gallagher, who had the most shots of any player in GW16. With Will Hughes making his debut, it allowed Gallagher to play further forward almost as a second striker. He caused Everton all kinds of problems with his clever runs in behind their defence.

He plays a Southampton side who have injury problems in goal and attack. 40 year old Willy Cabellero is in the Southampton goal – expect goals from Palace.

Anyone not saying Salah cap is going in the wrong direction.

For a vice pick, Jamie Vardy can be a very solid pick this week against Spurs. Sadly, Kelechi Iheanacho is one of the players set to be out for Leicester, and despite Daka’s performance against Newcastle, I feel like Vardy should start in midweek.

Make sure you have a strong bench as well, in case any games are postponed

Mo Salah is in red-hot form with 14 consecutive GWs of FPL attacking returns and a league-leading 14 goals and 9 assists in 16 games. With 5 goals and 2 assists against Newcastle, the Egyptian will be looking to extend that scoring record against a side that conceded 4 goals at Leicester just days prior.

With fixtures being at risk of postponement due to rising covid cases among teams, I would place the Vice Captaincy on reliable and consistent players like Bernardo Silva (v Leeds) or Dennis (v Burnley).

Despite going for Ronaldo (c) last week and just edging it, Salah against a Newcastle side quickly heading for the Championship is the clear standout this week.

For my VC I’ll be on Bernardo Silva, who aside from being in Pep’s words, “the best player in the League right now” is also playing on the first day of GW17 (thus avoiding any surprise covid news, hopefully) – against a Leeds side without Kalvin Phillips.
