FPL Team Preview Chelsea
Chelsea finished the season on a high as European Champions and in fourth place in the league.
They started the season with Lampard at the helm, replaced him with Tuchel in January and the German immediately transformed the club.
FPL Team Preview Chelsea
2020-21 Premier League Season
When Lampard left the club prior to GW20, Chelsea was 8th, seemingly losing sight of the pack in front of them.
Tuchel took over, went on a 10-game unbeaten run and Chelsea were transformed into a Top 4 chasing side. The strength of Tuchel’s Chelsea is their organisation at the back. In the 19 league games under the German, they kept 11 clean sheets.
Mount (MID | 7.5) finished as Chelsea’s top FPL player. He was never explosive, scoring 6 and providing 7 assists, pacing his goal involvements quite even across the 36 games he played. He also does not stand out in any particular statistic, except the fact that he took most of his teams corners (105) and had most attempted assists (87).
Mendy (GK | 6.0) should be Chelsea’s number 1 again on GW01. He kept a total of 16 clean sheets in just 31 appearances, second only to Ederson. He is at premium price this season, in the same pricetag as Ederson and Alisson.
Chilwell (DEF | 6.0) is also upgraded to a premium defender this season, only behind 3 Liverpool defenders. In truth he did not play a lot of games last season, just 27. There was a period in the season when he was literally rotated with Alonso on a weekly basis.
He may need a bit more convincing before FPL managers were to splurge on him – his TSB% of ~13% is baffling to say the least.
In many ways, Werner (FWD | 9.0) endured a difficult season. He was often criticised for his finishing and blamed for several defeats. However, he still managed to play 52 times in a grueling season, scoring a total of 12 goals and assisting 15 times.
He has the ability, but was probably lacking form, luck and confidence in some games last season. He may well turn out to be explosive – but perhaps a few more games are required to assess his form this season.
Havertz (MID | 8.5) was Chelsea’s hero in the Champions League Final. In Premier League / FPL, his form was patchy, scoring 4 and assisting 6. His missed chunks of the season through COVID and injuries and managed 18 starts.
Like Chilwell and Werner, more time is needed to assess Havertz’s role in the Chelsea team.
No defender scored more goals last season than Zouma (DEF | 5.5), that is if we exclude Dallas, who played in midfield all season long. He also had 12 shots on target – a record only bettered by Dunk for a defender.
His playing time, however, is of concern. He is not nailed on as a starter and had only started 22 times last season.
After spending over £200m last summer, Chelsea have been slow in the transfer market this season. They are unlikely to make a string of signings, but have been linked a a couple of top names in the global game.
First Five Fixtures
Difficult. Chelsea have 2 winnable home games but will visit Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs in the first 5 GWs.
It will be interesting how Tuchel will line his team up on GW01 – he has plenty of options at his disposal and was happy to tinker around last season.
No one Chelsea asset stand out and given their fixtures, it is perhaps prudent to wait and assess.
