FPL Team Preview Aston Villa
After earning promotion to the Premier League in 2019/20, Villa did really well last season to finish 11th with 55 points.
FPL Team Preview Aston Villa
2020-21 Premier League Season
The Villains won 16 games of the season while lost 15. They scored 55 and conceded 46 goals. They were well ahead of the 12th placed Newcastle by 10 points.
The team started the season winning all 4 of their matches and were placed as high as 2nd during that time – that included a stunning 7-2 win over Champions Liverpool in early October’20.
They enjoyed a good Christmas period with 11 points from 5 games and went on to stay around the 8th to 10th spot before settling eventually with a respectable 11th.
Emi Martinez (5.5 | GK) became an overnight FPL sensation after equaling the record of most FPL points by a goal-keeper (186). He kept 15 CS last season and had the highest number of Bonus Points. All of these achievements were remarkable, considering that he had been Arsenal’s backup goalkeeper for over 10 seasons.
In the summer, he took the international stage by storm, helping Argentina and Lionel Messi win Copa America Trophy by saving 3 penalties in Semi-Final.
He is currently owned by 39.8% managers who have kept faith on him despite him getting a high(er) price tag.
Jack Grealish (8.0 | MID) joined the elite club of players after a breathtaking season as he scored 6 and assisted 12 goals in his injury-curtailed 26 appearances. His xG/90 was 0.21 and xA/90 was 0.38 which amongst the highest. He also takes 2.06 Sh/90.
His stock went up even further with some good performances for England in Euro 2020 – making him one of the most sought after play-makers in the Premier League.
The natural concern at this stage is his commitment to Villa. With offers coming in for him, it is anyone’s guess where he will be on GW01.
Ollie Watkins (7.5 | FWD) netted 14 goals last season with 9 assists and effectively “carried” Villa when Grealish was out with an injury.
He had an xG/90 of 0.44 with xA/90 of 0.14. He took 2.65 Sh/90 and will be the main set-piece taker. He is currently owned by 34.7% managers which shows that he might be a safe pick.
Bertrand Traore (6.0 | MID) scored 7 goals last season and also registered 7 assists to his name. He took 2.44 Sh/90 and also had an x+A/90 of 0.41. He can be one of the best differentials as he is owned by less than 2% managers and with some great fixtures to begin, he can give great rewards to his mangers.
He is not a guaranteed starter so best to monitor the ins and outs at the club before GW01.
Matt Targett (5.0 | DEF) too impressed last season – he assisted 4 goals and had 15 clean-sheets. He can be a good differential this season due to his ownership of less than 10%. Have a look at his heat map below.
Emiliano Buendia (6.5 | MID) became Aston Villa’s club record signing when he moved from Norwich for £33m. His transfer was decided early, likely because Villa wanted to seal the deal amidst interests from other Premier League sides.
He scored 16 and provided 15 assists for Norwich in the EFL 2020/21. He also had 7 assists in his debut PL season two seasons ago and is a recognised play-maker. He also has a good reputation with his set-pieces delivery – with Grealish typically the most fouled player in the league, we can be in for some treats here with Buendia.
He had 3.03 Key Passes per match on an average in EFL. He is already owned by 12% managers.
Young (5.0 | DEF) also returned to the club after a 10-year stint away but is not likely to break into the XI.
First 5 Fixtures
Other than Chelsea on GW04, Villa can be said to have one of the best set of opening fixtures.
Aston Villa assets like Grealish, Watkins and Martinez will attract a lot of attention from GW01. They will likely make sensible picks, especially since Villa plays two of the 3 promoted sides within the first 3 GWs.
Buendia can potentially be a FPL sensation at his price, provided he settles in immediately.
