FPL Team Preview Arsenal
2020-21 Premier League Season
Arsenal won 3 of the their first 4 league games but a spell of 7 games without a win from early November to mid-December set the scene for their season.
They eventually won 18 games, scoring 55 and conceding 39 goals. For the second half of the season, they hovered around the 9th to 11th spot, never putting up a run to threaten the teams in front of them.
Defensively, they do look solid – only Man City and Chelsea have conceded fewer. It was the inability to close off games that really hurt them.
PE Aubmeyang (10.0 | FWD) had a poor season by his high standards, managing 10 goals and 3 assists in his 29 appearances.
He suffered from malaria and was injured often at points in the the season which affected his performance.
He took 3.23 Sh/90 with xG+A/90 of 0.89 which is amazingly good. He is owned by just 3.5% managers and can be a great differential, with his reduced pricetag.
Alexandre Lacazette (8.5 | FWD) scored more than 10 goals for the 4th consecutive season. “Under-rated” is a good term to describe the Frenchman.
He scored 13 goals with 3 assists last season with 2.79 Sh/90. He had an xG/90 of 0.58 with xA/90 of 0.17. However, there can be some rotation risk with him as always.
Arsenals’ record signing Nicolas Pepe (7.5 | MID) improved after a poor 2019/20 season, with 10 goals and 3 assists.
He scored 5 of those scored goals in the last 3 games as well, signing off his season on a high. He took 2.64 Sh/90 with xG+A/90 of 0.53.
Kieren Tierney (5.0 | DEF) was the pick of defenders from a team that performed really well in defense. He netted the ball 1 time and assisted it 4 times in his 29 appearances during the season with 0.59 Sh/90. He had 1.21 Key Passes per game on an average. He also had 2.08 touches per game which shows his attacking threat. From defensive perspective, he kept 8 clean-sheets with 2.97 Blocks per game on an average.
Tavares (4.5 | DEF) is a left-back who arrived from Benfica. He played 41 times for the Portuguese side, scoring once and provided 7 assists. He is likely to be one for the future, we do not expect him to replace Tierney from the onset.
Sambi Lokonga (5.0 | MID) arrived from Anderlecht, where he was a regular over the last two seasons. He plays deep and is a Xhaka-replacement over the longer term. He does not offer much FPL prospect at this point.
Ben White (4.5 | DEF) arrives on a hefty price tag and is likely to go straight into the Gunners’ first XI. He may not offer much on the attacking end but 4.5 looks good for a Arsenal center-half.
First Five Fixtures
A real mixed bag for the Gunners in their first 5 games.
They do play promoted Brentford on GW01 and Norwich on GW04, but those two games sandwich two difficult games – away at Chelsea and at home against City. Arsenal have lost their last 8 league games against City.
No one play really stand out for the Gunners for the first 5 GWs, Tierney can be a good choice if there are options to bench him against Chelsea and/or Man City.
