FFT Spotlight: The Surprise Package XI

With the season coming to the business end of things, much have yet to be settled but with just 6 GWs left, we have gathered our editorial team and look back at an XI of surprise packages. In a nutshell, none of these players were expected to make a particular splash before the season started but have, in their own ways, taken this FPL season by storm.

Do you agree with our XI?

===================================

GK – Neil Etheridge (CAR) – In a Cardiff side that few gave any hope of surviving, the first South East Asian to play in the Premier League actually managed to keep 8 clean sheets and save 3 penalties in that process, making him currently the 4th highest scoring Premier league keeper in the league. In case you are wondering, he was born in London to an English father and a Filipino mother.

DEF – Aaron Wan-Bissaka (CRY) – A relative unknown before the start of the season, he broke into the first team and contributed to 10 clean sheets in 28 matches played. Definitely a future England international.

DEF –  Jose Holebas (WAT) – Although his disciplinary records is not somewhat atrocious, he still managed to provide 7 assists, alongside Robertson (10), Alonso (8) and Kolasinac (7). The veteran is enjoying one of his past seasons at 34.

DEF – Sol Bamba (CAR) – Another spark in the Cardiff team is defender Sol Bamba. The Ivory Coast international has 4 goals, 1 assist and 7 clean sheets to his name before a serious injury in GW29 ended his season prematurely. He would no doubt be on other clubs’ radars should Cardiff go down.

DEF – Matt Doherty (WOL) – Wolves is the surprise team of the season and Doherty is one of the stand-out players. Deployed regularly in a wing-back role, he is involved in 9 goals so far. His ownership % (TSB) has rarely fallen below 20% for most part of the season.

MID – Ryan Fraser (BOU) – Last season stats: 5 goals & 3 assists in 26 games. This season stats: 6 goals & 10 assists in 31 games. His stats for this season says it all. Joint second in the assist charts with Eriksen and just 1 behind Hazard. Being mentioned in the same breath with those 2 players alone says a lot about his contributions this season. Not to mention he’s currently edging the likes of Sterling, Sane, David Silva & Pogba.

MID – Gylfi Sigurdsson (EVE) – A seasoned premier league player, Sigurdsson joined Everton in a club record deal and has since proven to be worth every penny. He’s joint top in goals n assists for them in the league thus far and all this for a reasonable FPL price tag of 7.3.

MID – Luka Milivojevic (CRY) – The Serb has played every minute of Palace’s season so far and has already scored 10 goals this season, 9 (out of 9) of them from the spot. He is one player whose starting value will surely go up at the start of next season (6.5 at the start of this season).

FWD – Aleksander Mitrovic (FUL) – An entry to the team of the year but coming from a relegated side, surprise! He is the only bright spark in this Fulham side. With 10 goals and 2 assists, he had 3 double digits hauls and at one point of the season, he was one of the most popular mid-price forward among FPL managers.

FWD  – Raul Jimenez (WOL) – Of the promoted sides, both Wolves & Fulham spent big but the results have been a stark contrast. Amidst all the multi million signings, it is actually the loan signing of Mexican Raul Jimenez that has been the biggest bargain so far. Whilst he was signed in 2016 by Benfica to become then the most expensive transfer in the Portugese league, his returns for Benfica of 18 goals in 80 appearances have not been impressive for a striker. Now, with only less than a full season completed, Jimenez has already scored 12 goals for Wolves, making him the 4th highest scoring striker in the fantasy league.

FWD – Marcus Rashford (MNU) – Was expected to struggle for regular playing time on the wings, competing with Martial, Sanchez, Lingard, Mata for a starting berth under Mourinho. But the appointment of Solskjaer rejuvenated his fledgling career and his stock has risen considerably over the last few months, culminating in transfer links to both Real Madrid and Barcelona.
